4th Grade Project Jubilee Students See History In Action
Monday, May 24, 2010

Fourth grade and Project Jubilee students of Carol Cox, Geri Peacock and Gerri McDonald, from Perdido Elementary/Middle School enjoyed the outstanding hands on educational programs sponsored by the Monroe County Heritage Museums in Monroeville, Alabama this school year.  The first trip took place in November at Rikard's Mill near Beatrice, Alabama.  Students were able to see first hand, the water-powered grain mill and museum which was built in 1845, a covered bridge, blacksmith shop, cane syrup mill and log cabin.  The best part students and parents felt were the demonstrations done by individuals dressed in clothing from the 1800's.  Students were treated to rides in horse drawn wagons, candle making and even learned how to wash clothes by hand!

As a follow up to the Pioneer Days, students next visited the Claiborne Lock & Dam and Alabama River Museum in Franklin, Alabama, for the Alabama River Festival.  While the fall field trip focused on the lives of pioneers, this trip focused on the Native Americans in Southern Alabama.  Students toured the museum where they were able to study a collection of fossils and Native American artifacts found in Monroe County.   Of great interest to both students and parents was the replica of the Nettie Quill, a steamboat which traveled the Alabama River.  In addition, students had the chance to learn several games that were played by the Native Americans as well as look at a wide range of arts and crafts.

Pictured below are students and parents from both field trips.
