Shedding Light on the Dark Ages
Wednesday, May 12, 2010

Humanities students at Perdido Middle School recently completed an in-depth study of the Middle Ages.  Students read a variety of historical fiction, including:  The King's Shadow, The Midwife's Apprentice and  The Door in the Wall.  In addition to their literary studies, students researched such events as; The Black Death, chivalry, Feudalism, illuminated writing, mottos and Heraldic Shields.  After students discovered what the various colors and symbols stood for on the original shields, they created their own personal shield that was representatives of their individual likes and beliefs.  Once they completed their shields, students made an illuminated writing of their first initial.  To bring their project to completion, students wrote their own personal motto then translated it into Latin.
