These students know more than most politicians when it comes to money!
For the fifth straight year, students at Perdido Elementary/Middle School have placed in the top ten in the state in the Stock Market Game. During the ten week spring competition, all 4th and 5th grade students were taught the basic principals of investing in the Stock Market. In addition to learning how to play the game, students were taught important concepts such as: diversification, buying what they know, how current events can cause rapid changes in the values of stock, and how dividends can also help you increase your earnings.
Out of 131 teams, the 5th grade team of; Bethany Hadley, Ashley Presley, Brianna Leddick, Denise Jones and Haley Vinson, placed 7th. This team of girls made over $14,000.00 during the ten week competition, which meant that they made a profit of 9.8%. When asked about their stock selections, they commented that they bought a lot of different stocks, in fact they bought 45. Out of the 45 they chose, only 8 lost anything at all. Some of their top picks were: Macerich Co; earned 22%, Walmart; earned 15%, Deutsche Bank AG; earned 15%, Och-Ziff Capital Management Group LLC; earned 21% and Ocwen Financial Corporation; earned 16%.
